Suburban Marauders

The oil embargo forced the government to ration fuel. Rationing hit the
suburbs hard. The suburban economy, wholly dependent
on cheap and abundant gasoline suffered a total economic collapse. It
became obvious to the crisis managers in the Department of Homeland Security
that central distribution centers would have to be set up to deliver food
to the growing number of jobless suburbanites. The government urged suburbanites
to abandon their homes and move to makeshift quarters in stadiums and
shopping malls. Most suburbanites, conditioned to resent big government
resisted the orders to leave their homes and instead joined militia groups
that ambushed aid convoys, stealing the food and fuel destined for the
cities and central food aid distribution centers.
